What Makes a Good Flat Roof?

21/08/2017

Flat roofing is back in fashion when it comes to building design. Unlike a pitched roof, a flat roof offers the option of having an additional outdoor space. The flat surface can be used as a “living roof” which is covered in vegetation. Flat roofs also offer a great deal of flexibility when it comes to installation of solar panels as they can be mounted to maximise on the sunlight they receive depending on the positioning of your home. In this week’s blog, we focus on the benefits of three different materials commonly used in flat roofing.

EPDM

If you’re looking for a good roof, longevity is certainly going to be a key consideration when it comes to the system you choose. RG Leverett currently install Firestone EPDM roofing, a system that offers a roof covering made from a single seamless piece of rubber. It’s widely known as one of the best in the business due to its unbeatably airtight finish which makes it one of the hardest wearing and longest lasting roofing systems around.

Felt

In days gone by, felt roofing didn’t always have a good reputation. That’s not the case with modern felt roofing which is now laid with the aid of a blow torch to join the felt to the roof structure below. Our high-performance 3-layer felt roofing systems are fire resistant, acoustically insulated and affordable. The modern manufacturing techniques of felt roofing also means they offer greater resistance to UV and are less prone to cracking under extreme temperatures.

GRP (Fibreglass)

As scrap metal prices have soared, so have instances of lead roof theft. We regularly replace old lead roofs with modern GRP systems which can be installed to give the impression of a lead roof, whilst eliminating the potential for theft. GRP isn’t just a convenient alternative to other roofing systems. GRP is one of the most robust coverings on the market making them perfect for roof-top terraces.
