RG Leverett Ltd Roofing & Roofline

What is the Best Way to Select a Roofing Contractor?

There are five things we always recommend that customers look out for when choosing their roofing contractor:

  • Accreditations: Check that your chosen contractor is a member of an approved industry federation, such as the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), the Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC), FairTrades or Government TrustMark. You can view all of our accreditations by clicking here.
  • References: Any reputable roofing contractor will be happy to provide references and examples of their previous work. Our testimonials page features feedback from many of the customers we have worked with over the years.
  • Insurance: Check that your contractor has adequate public and employers’ liability insurance. At RG Leverett we have £10million public and £10million employers’ liability insurance.
  • Experience: Ask how long your chosen company have been trading for, rather than the combined years of experience they have in the industry. We are a family run business, which has been trading since 1986.

How Should I Choose the Right Roofing System for My Property?

With a choice of roofing systems to choose from, it can be difficult to know which is most suited to your roof. Before preparing their quotation, your roofing contractor should be happy to talk you through the options which are available, taking into consideration factors such as:

  • The level of foot traffic on the roof.
  • The need for further penetrations into the roof surface in the future.
  • Whether there are stack emissions and will they drift onto the surface of the roof.
  • If there are emissions, how they will affect the surface and materials.

Some systems are more suited to certain roofs than others. Any knowledgeable roofer will be able to explain why their recommendation is the most appropriate for your roof. By taking the time to fully understand your roof, our experienced roofers are able to offer you the most up-to-date, high quality roofing systems at a competitive price.

Who Will Carry out the Work to My Roof?

Over the past three decades we have worked hard to build a reputation as an honest, fair and responsible company. To ensure we maintain that reputation, we carefully choose the people who work for us. For that reason, all of our roofers are employed directly by RG Leverett and we do not use sub-contractors. With 25 years’ experience in the industry, our team are highly professional and you can rest assured that every project we undertake will be completed to the highest standards.

What Happens If My Property Is Damaged During The Work?

If you employ a reputable contractor, it is highly unlikely that you will experience any damage to your property. However, it is a legal requirement that contractors hold two forms of insurance, employers’ liability and public liability, to protect customers in the event that something should go wrong.

Employing a contractor who does not hold this cover leaves you at risk of being liable for any expenses which may arise. At RG Leverett we are covered by £10million of public liability and £10million of employers’ liability insurance. You can rest assured that in the unlikely event that something should go wrong, we are protected.

What If the Work to My Roof Reveals Unforeseen Damage?

In most instances an experienced roofing contractor should be able to identify any issues with your roof as part of their initial survey. If we have concerns regarding possible water damage or structural problems, we always factor this into a contingency within the quote we provide.

In the unlikely event that we discover further issues once work has commenced, we will always stop and discuss them with you before proceeding any further. We ensure that our customers are kept fully informed thorough the process and are not left with any unexpected additional costs at the end of the job.

What Preventative Measures Should I Take to Protect My Roof?

We receive a number of calls from customers who don’t actually have a problem with their roof, but who want to be proactive about its upkeep. As part of our free, no obligation survey, one of our roofers will be happy to discuss ways of prolonging the lifespan of your roof. This can vary from no further action if the roof is in good condition to annual inspections.

Whatever the state of your roof, our survey will provide you with full details of its current condition, including photographs, to help you make any decisions about future roofing work you may be considering.

Should I Use a Home Improvement Company to Protect My Roof?

Over the years we have heard the experiences of customers who have had work carried out by a home improvement company, such as installing windows and doors, and subsequently received an offer to carry out roofing work at the same time. If there is a problem with your roof, we would always recommend that you contact a specialist roofing company to carry out the work.

It is not uncommon for companies in other industries to expand their portfolio to include other trades during quiet periods. The result of this is unqualified tradesmen carrying out work to a poor standard and leaving you to pick up the pieces when the roof inevitably fails.

When choosing a contractor for your roofing work, always ensure they are members of an industry recognised confederation, such as the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) or Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC).

Should I Use A Cold Caller Who Arrives At My Door?

Like home improvement companies, it is not uncommon for cold callers to arrive at your door with a big smile on their face and offer to fix a problem with your roof which they spotted as they were driving past. They will often conveniently have the required materials on the van and will offer you a fantastic price if you agree to the work there and then.

We would always recommend that customers avoid cold callers and consult a specialist roofing contractor if you have any concerns over the condition of your roof. In many instances an agreement with a cold caller will not be covered by a contract and you may end up handing over money for a poorly finished job or one that is not finished at all.

Is It Possible to Get a Lifetime Roof Guarantee?

In the past, customers have contacted us having been offered a lifetime roofing guarantee by another company. In our experience, it is unlikely that any reputable roofing contractor would be able to offer customers a lifetime guarantee on any roofing system.

Should a company offer you such a deal we would recommend that you carefully examine the terms and conditions. Often the contractors’ definition of ‘a lifetime’ is between 10 and 20 years. In addition to this, the guarantee will often be company backed and not endorsed by any separate insurance or manufacturer’s warranty.

What Roofing Guarantee Does RG Leverett Offer?

The guarantee we offer will vary depending on the roofing system you have installed, though you can expect it to be between 15 and 25 years. As a member of the Confederation of Roofing Contractors, we are able to offer a 20 year independent insurance backed guarantee, ensuring you have complete peace of mind. Full details of your guarantee will be outlined as part of your initial quotation and also included in your invoice upon completion of the work.

Am I Obliged to Pay For a Quote?

We have previously been approached by customers who were left surprised at being asked to pay for the survey of their roof. If your contractor informed you of the charge beforehand you are obliged to pay, though if you were not informed this is not ethical business practice.

At RG Leverett we provide a free, no obligation survey of your roof. A detailed written quotation for any necessary works will also be posted to you within 72 hours of visiting your property.

When Will I be expected to Pay for the Work to My Roof?

At RG Leverett we have a 5 step Customer Service Pledge. As part of that pledge, we do not ask customers to make any payment until they receive our detailed invoice upon completion of the work. This invoice will outline all of the work which has been completed, associated costs and full details of your guarantee.

We would always advise customers to be cautious of any contractors who ask for large or full payment before any work has been completed – particularly if you have not received any official paperwork from them. If in any doubt, always check their credentials with a recognised industry body.

Will RG Leverett Dispose of All Construction Debris?

Upon completion of the work, we will arrange for all construction debris to be removed from your property and taken to an appropriate waste recycling facility. All costs for the removal of debris are included within your quotation.

Should harmful substances, such as asbestos, be discovered in your roof structure, these will need to be collected by your local council or an approved contractor. We are happy to arrange the collection on your behalf and will outline any additional charges within your quotation.

For larger projects, where the amount of waste is beyond what can be transported in our vehicles, we will arrange for a skip to be delivered and collected from your property. Once again, any costs associated with this will be clearly detailed within your quotation.
