Why Social Media Isn’t The Place To Shop For Roof Insulation

Insulation foam installed at property in Norwich

Energy prices remain incredibly high and many homeowners are rightly considering ways to improve the energy efficiency of their homes in an effort to reduce their bills. But whilst there are many products on the market that can help you achieve this aim, there are also cowboys who will seek to take advantage.

For example, we regularly see adverts on social media from companies offering services that involve spraying foam insulation to the roof. This is not good practice and can cause serious damage to your roof. It will inevitably be picked up during any survey when you try to sell your property and will very likely impact upon the valuation.

We’d carried out a complete roof replacement for this customer in Norwich just 5 years ago. Since then they had been talked into having foam insulation sprayed into their roof. This caused serious condensation issues and resulted in significant damage to the roof structure, membrane and tiles. Unfortunately the only option was to replace the whole roof for a second time - quite a costly mistake!

Foam insulation removed from roof structure

Before any remedial work could be done, our team first had to remove all of the tiles, membrane and 18 ton bags full of insulation waste from the existing roof structure. In their place we fitted new treated timber battens and a new breather membrane. The old tiles were, where possible, cleaned off and refitted.

To improve the energy efficiency of the property, we installed new loft roll insulation into the loft area. This also ensured the property complied with the current building regulations for the thermal insulation of a tiled roof.
