How Do I Know If My Roof Needs Repair?
Let's be honest - your roof isn't something you think about much… until something goes wrong. And by then, it might already be a bigger (and more expensive) job than it needs to be. So how do you spot the signs before it gets to that point?
Here's what to look out for:
1. Missing or slipped tiles
Probably the most obvious sign - if you notice tiles or slates have slipped out of place, or worse, fallen off completely, it's time to call someone in. Gaps in your roof leave your home exposed to the elements, and water will find its way in sooner or later.
2. Damp patches or water stains
Got damp spots on your ceilings or walls, especially in the attic? That's often a giveaway that water's sneaking in from above. It might not look like much now, but even small leaks can lead to bigger problems like mould, rot, or insulation damage.
3. Sagging areas or dips in the roofline
If your roof doesn't look straight from the outside - or there are visible dips or sags - it could point to structural issues or water damage. These things never fix themselves, so it's worth getting it checked before it worsens.
4. Debris in your gutters
Finding bits of tile, slate, or shingle in your gutters? That's often a sign your roof's starting to break down. Your gutters may also be clogged with moss, which can lead to water pooling on your roof - never a good thing.
5. It's just getting on a bit
Even the best roof won't last forever. If yours is 20+ years old and hasn't had a proper once-over in a while, it's probably due for a health check. That doesn't mean it needs replacing - but catching issues early can save you money in the long run.
