We recently had the pleasure of working on a real gem of a property - a 300-year-old home right here in Norfolk that was long overdue for a new roof. The original roof had done well to last this long, but it had definitely seen better days. It was time for a full refresh, and we were excited to help give this beautiful old home the protection it deserves.
Choosing the Right Slate

For a property of this age and character, the materials really matter - both in terms of looks and longevity. We went with T1 natural slates for this one, which are known for their strength, clean finish, and consistent size and thickness. They’re a great choice for heritage properties because they maintain that traditional look while offering top-level durability.
T1 slates don’t just look the part - they’re built to last and stand up to everything the British weather can throw at them. When you’re investing in a full re-roof, it’s important to know the materials will hold up for decades, and these certainly will.
Details That Make the Difference

To finish the look and ensure long-term performance, we added Code 6 lead hips, which provide excellent protection at the joints and ridges of the roof. It’s not just about functionality - they give a really smart, crisp finish too. We also used copper tags to fix the slates in place. These are a small detail, but they make a big difference in keeping everything secure and weatherproof for the long haul.
Round the back, the bay roofs were finished in lead - a tried-and-tested material that works especially well on more detailed roof shapes. It moulds neatly to fit the structure and offers brilliant weather resistance which is key in those trickier areas.
A Big Improvement - and Built to Last
The end result? A massive upgrade, both visually and structurally. The old roof had served its time, but this new one will give the house a whole new lease of life. It’s watertight, well-ventilated, and looks absolutely spot on - exactly what this lovely old home needed.
We always take pride in blending the old with the new - making sure our work complements the character of the property while bringing it up to modern standards. In this case, the slate and lead combo really set the house off and gave it a fresh but timeless look.
