We have just completed work on another incredibly satisfying project - this time at the Royal Derby Hospital. Our team waterproofed three staircases and a storage room, using a tapered drainage scheme to make sure the water flows exactly where it should. The whole area now looks smart and solid, finished in the Danosa built-up felt system, which is a real workhorse when it comes to flat roofs.
So, what’s a tapered drainage scheme? Essentially, it’s a clever way of adding a slight slope to a flat roof. You might think a flat roof should just be…flat, but the truth is, water can easily pool if it’s not guided properly. By using tapered insulation, we can direct the rainwater naturally towards the drains. Doing so results in fewer puddles, a reduced chance of leaks, and a roof that will continue to perform at its best for many years to come. It’s one of those small details that makes a huge difference in the long term.

Now, about the Danosa built-up felt system. For a busy place like a hospital, this kind of system is perfect. It is high-quality, heavy-duty roof material designed to provide a tough, weatherproof finish that is going to last. These roofs take a lot of wear and tear, and we want them to stay watertight and problem-free. What’s more, it comes with a 25-year warranty, so there is real peace of mind to be had knowing the roof is covered for decades to come.

Combining the tapered drainage with Danosa felt gives you a roof that’s both practical and durable. Water is directed efficiently toward the drains, while the felt layer provides a completely waterproof barrier. It also helps to protect the structure underneath and supports insulation, which can help with energy efficiency. It’s a smart setup that works on multiple levels.
In our opinion, making a roof look nice is part of the job, but ultimately projects such as this one are all about performance, reliability, and longevity. Staircores and storage areas see constant use, so the roof has to hold up, and with the right materials and drainage in place, this roof will do exactly that.

If you’re thinking about a flat roof for a commercial building - or even your home - there’s a lot to consider, from drainage to materials. But done properly, with systems like Danosa, and the right tapered design, you get a roof that protects your building, reduces maintenance, and lasts for decades.
