New Insulated Flat Roof and Glass Rooflight in Norwich City Centre

New Insulated Flat Roof and Glass Rooflight in Norwich City Centre

If you are considering replacing an older flat roof, this recent project in Norwich city centre is a good example of how we can use the opportunity to improve more than just the waterproof covering.

The existing flat roof and rooflight had both reached the point where replacement was needed, so we were asked to carry out a full refurbishment. The first phase is now complete, with a new Danosa Polydan built-up bituminous roofing system installed, additional insulation added and the old rooflight replaced with a new glass unit.

Because of the city-centre location, there was a little more planning involved before we could get started. We arranged for the materials to be taken safely up onto the roof early in the morning, before the surrounding area became busy, which meant our team could then get on with the roofing work without unnecessary disruption.

Improving the Insulation While the Roof Was Open

One of the things we always look at when replacing an older flat roof is the insulation underneath it.

On this project, we increased the insulation as part of the new roof build-up so that the completed roof would comply with current Building Regulations. This also improves the thermal performance of the roof, rather than simply replacing the waterproof layer and leaving the older insulation in place.

For anyone with an ageing flat roof, this is worth considering. If the existing system is already being removed, it can be the right time to look at whether the insulation is still suitable and whether the new roof can be improved as a whole.

A New Danosa Polydan Roofing System

We installed a high-performance Danosa Polydan built-up bituminous roofing system across the roof.

This type of system is made up of multiple layers that work together to provide a strong, durable waterproof covering. It is a roofing system we use where long-term protection and reliability are particularly important.

For this project, the completed system is covered by our 25-year guarantee for both materials and workmanship.

That is an important part of the job for us. A new flat roof is a significant investment, so we want customers to know exactly what has been installed and what protection they have once the work is complete.

Replacing the Old Rooflight at the Same Time

The existing rooflight was also very old, so rather than working around it while installing a completely new roof, we replaced it with a new glass rooflight.

The new unit has been incorporated into the roofing system and weathered in as part of the overall installation, while continuing to bring natural light into the room below.

If you have an older rooflight within a flat roof that you are thinking of replacing, it is often worth looking at the two together. Keeping an ageing rooflight in place can mean further work is needed later, so replacing it while the surrounding roof is already being refurbished can sometimes be the more sensible approach.

First Phase Complete

The first phase has now given this Norwich city-centre property a new waterproofing system, improved insulation and a replacement glass rooflight.

We will be returning later this month to complete the next phase, but the work completed so far is a good example of how a flat roof refurbishment can address several parts of the roof at the same time rather than simply replacing what is visible on the surface.
