We’ve recently been in Kenninghall, near Thetford, to complete a roof refurbishment on a timber sun room. The project saw us install a new red felt shingle roofing system and the result is a durable finish that complements the character of the garden building beautifully.
It may have been a smaller project than some of our traditional roofing projects, but the results were no less important. Like a home, the roofs on sun rooms and garden buildings still need to deliver dependable protection from the rain, wind and changing weather conditions. Thanks to our careful installation and well-finished details, we were able to ensure that this roof structure will remain dry and attractive for many years to come.
Removing the Existing Roof Covering
We began by removing the existing roof covering. This allowed us to conduct a further inspection of the roof structure and ensure that the area was correctly prepared for the installation of the new system.
Over time, exposure to sunlight, rainfall, frost and seasonal temperature changes can cause the condition of a garden building roof to gradually deteriorate. Warning signs that this is happening can include:
- Lifting edges
- Cracked materials
- Fading
- Water staining
- Recurring leaks inside the structure
Identifying these problems early, before moisture causes further damage, can help to protect the timbers beneath the roof - something that will likely reduce the chances of more extensive and costly repairs becoming necessary further down the line.
Installing a New Red Felt Shingle Roof
For this project, we installed a new red felt shingle roofing system across the pitched and hipped roof structure.
Felt shingles are well suited to sun rooms, summerhouses and other garden buildings. Their relatively lightweight construction makes them appropriate for many timber structures, while the individual shingle pattern creates a more decorative appearance than a plain sheet covering.
The red finish chosen for this project works particularly well with the natural timber walls and doors. It has refreshed the appearance of the entire building without changing its traditional garden-room character.

Roofing for Garden Rooms and Outdoor Buildings
This project demonstrates that professional roofing is just as important for garden buildings as it is for homes, garages and commercial properties.
Alongside our pitched roofing services and roof repair work, we can assess and refurbish roofs on sun rooms, summerhouses, workshops and other outdoor structures. We will explain the available options honestly and recommend a solution suited to the building rather than applying a standard approach.
RG Leverett has been providing professional roofing services since 1986. As a family-run, fully insured and accredited contractor, we focus on high-quality workmanship and clear advice without pushy sales tactics.
